Recently, SERCAP’s Essential & Critical Needs Program assisted a low-income, family of six (6) in Botetourt County, VA, with repairing their septic drain-field. The family has been living in their home for four (4) years, and they recently began experiencing difficulty with their septic system. The drain-field was not draining properly and sewage/wastewater was coming out of the ground. However, since the family is low-income, they were unable to afford the cost of repairing the septic drain-field themselves without experiencing financial hardship.
Fortunately, SERCAP was able to step-in and provide financial assistance to help with the needed repairs. SERCAP’s Essential & Critical Needs Program provided a Grant in the amount of $1,200.00 for the project, restoring full functionality to the clients’ septic drain-field, and once again providing the family with an environmentally sound wastewater solution.
Without SERCAP’s Essential & Critical Needs Program, and other similar programs and services, many low-income individuals and communities would be forced to go without such necessities as fully functioning wells and septic systems, safe and affordable housing, reliable access to clean drinking water, indoor plumbing, community development and infrastructure needs, water/wastewater infrastructure solutions, and more. It is important to remember that even in the US in the 21st Century; there are those who do not have reliable access to clean, safe drinking water, environmentally sound septic facilities, and affordable housing.
